The origin of the onyx stone is linked to spring water

While granite, quartzite, and marble are hidden deep in the earth’s crust, the onyx stone is born on the earth’s surface. Onyx is formed from spring water or groundwater that is high in dissolved calcite. In the spring, when water sources become active, minerals settle to the bottom and form a crust of calcite crystals. Over time, a large layer of minerals forms.

Different layers of stone color are formed due to differences in water flow and small amounts of impurities. White or clear calcite is most common, but the color is determined by small amounts of other colored minerals.

The most popular color for onyx stone is the color of warm honey, which is determined by iron oxide. The translucent layers of onyx stone reflect the subtle peculiarities of spring water flow.

Onyx stone slabs are made by cutting lengthwise through all layers, thus opening up a masterpiece of art created over many years by nature.

Onyx rock is often formed in underground caves, where water also flows. Pieces of limestone or even volcanic rocks can be found in the veins of glazed calcite. Basically, the impressive onyx stone is found anywhere mineral springs flow.

Travertine is formed in the same way as onyx. The main difference between travertine and onyx is that travertine has porous, lace-shaped textures and onyx is smooth and non-porous. However, in general, the two stones are similar in composition.
